Once upon a newborn

I recently embarked on a new idea.  I have been doing The Storybook Collection for about six years now for children ages 2-8.  I decided that I would like to photograph more newborns and what a cool way to do this was also through a "Storybook".  I wanted to do something different from everyone else and that is why I had started The Storybook Collection in the first place!  I wanted to portray the fairytales through my newborn photography and design a "storybook" with these images in it.

I started collecting ideas for backgrounds, props and poses.  Then of course I had to go shopping for just the right costumes and props.  I love to look for items that will help tell the story in my images.  Photography is all about telling a story, and what better way to document a newborn than with fairytales!

My first project was Cinderella. Cinderella was my favorite fairytale, so it was fitting that I start with that one. I had to find a pumpkin that would accommodate a baby and then cut it out.  I wanted to put it on wheels, but after a month of looking for something that would work, I decided to just put her in the pumpkin patch.

Next was The Princess and the Pea.  I had the perfect bed for it, I just had to find lots of "mattresses" and a pea.  I used the same bed with a different background for Sleeping Beauty.  Of course at this point my beauty wouldn't go to sleep!  A spinning wheel was a must for this scene.

Little Mermaid was another of my favorites so we had to have a mermaid in an oyster shell.  Etsy was a great place to find a mermaid tail.

This year's must popular story is Frozen.  I had the perfect sleigh for my frozen princess.

No storybook would be complete without Little Red Riding Hood!  I found a "stump" that worked great for a newborn to sit in and grandma's basket of goodies completed the set.

The beginning and end of the book are the sleeping baby with her fairytale books.

I had so much fun planning and shooting this session.  I can't wait to photography a little boy and his "storybook" scenes!
